Why is Dental Care important for your pet?

Dental care is crucial for your pet’s overall health and well-being. Pets can suffer from dental issues that, if left untreated, may lead to serious health problems. Regular dental care helps prevent conditions such as gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath, ensuring your pet maintains optimal oral hygiene. Additionally, proper dental care can extend your pet’s lifespan and improve their quality of life by reducing the risk of infections spreading to other parts of the body.

Consequences of Neglecting Dental Care

Neglecting your pet’s dental care can lead to various serious consequences, impacting their health and quality of life. Without proper oral hygiene, pets are prone to developing gum disease, which can cause pain, inflammation, and infection. Untreated dental issues can also result in tooth decay, leading to discomfort and difficulty eating. Moreover, poor dental health can contribute to systemic infections, affecting vital organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys. Bad breath, plaque buildup, and eventual tooth loss are further consequences of inadequate dental care, highlighting the importance of regular dental check-ups and preventive measures for your pet’s overall well-being.

At Elon Oaks Veterinary Hospital, our veterinarians emphasize the significance of proactive dental care to prevent these adverse outcomes. We provide dental services tailored to your pet’s specific needs, including routine cleanings, dental evaluation, and tooth extractions. By addressing dental issues early on, our experienced team helps safeguard your pet’s oral health and minimize the risk of complications.

FAQs

Is my pet eligible to schedule a Dental Appointment?

Patients are eligible to schedule a Dental Appointment if they meet the following criteria:

  • Patient has been seen within the last 6 months by an EOVH veterinarian
  • All surgery patients must be up to date on Rabies, DAPP, and Bordetella. Vaccines must be updated a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the procedure.
  • Patient should be in good health without any abnormal signs such as Vomiting, Diarrhea, Coughing, Sneezing, Lethargy, or not feeling well/acting themselves
What happens during a dental cleaning?
  • Scaling – This is the process of removing hard tartar from the surface of your pet’s teeth, including under the gumline, removing trapped bacteria and infection.
  • Polishing – This smooths out microscopic etches on the surface of the teeth that may otherwise encourage plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Charting – This is the process of documenting the health of the teeth and evaluating any pockets, loss of bone, gingivitis, or other signs of disease.
  • X-Rays – Up to 75% of a pet’s tooth is BELOW the gumline! The only way to assess the health of this portion of the teeth is with xrays.

We include several procedures in our dental package that may be considered “add-ons” at other vet clinics.

  • Pre-anesthetic bloodwork – To make anesthesia as safe as possible, we evaluate bloodwork ahead of time to determine if anything’s off that would affect their ability to handle anesthesia.
  • IV fluid therapy – When a pet goes under anesthesia, their blood pressure decreases. By providing IV fluids, we make anesthesia safer by helping the pet’s body compensate for that decrease in blood pressure.
  • Dental X-Rays – This is included in all dental cleanings so we can completely evaluate the health of the teeth.
How much does it cost?

The cost depends on exactly what service your pet needs. A dental cleaning (without extractions) starts at $495. If your pet needs extractions (removal of diseased teeth), the cost depends on how many teeth need to be extracted. Additional information is available here.
